Meta Description Generator

Enter a URL and this reads the page, then writes five title and description pairs for it, each taking a different angle. Every pair is measured against the lengths Google shows in full, 40 to 60 characters for the title and 120 to 155 for the description, and anything outside that is flagged. For a page that is not live yet, switch to Paste a draft and give it the title and opening paragraphs instead.

We read the live page and write from its real title and opening content.

Picking between the five

Search the query you are targeting and read the nine other descriptions on the page before you choose. Most of them will say the same thing, because most of them were written from the same brief. The option worth using is the one that says something the others do not, and that is a judgment only you can make with the SERP in front of you.

An option marked short or over is still usable copy, but it is not yet the right shape for a result. A description under 120 characters leaves space the result beside yours will fill, so extend it with the detail that made you pick it in the first place. One over 155 is cut, and the cut falls at the end, so trim from there rather than from the opening. A page with little text on it is the usual reason the options come back short, and pasting more of the draft or naming the target keyword gives the next run more to work with.

Once you have picked, check it in the SERP preview, which measures the rendered width rather than the character count and shows the mobile result alongside the desktop one. If you are updating more than one page, the meta tag checker takes a list of URLs and tells you which ones need this treatment first.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a meta description be?

Between 120 and 155 characters. Shorter looks thin beside competitors who used the space; longer is truncated, and the part that gets cut is the part you wrote last. Every option is written to that range and measured against it afterwards, so any that lands outside is flagged with the amount it is off by and the direction it went.
